The Names You Answer To

March 12, 2026 · 5 min read

Half the names you answer to were never yours. Here is how to start telling the difference.

There are names you answer to that nobody handed you on purpose.

Difficult. Too much. Too sensitive. Cold. Dramatic. Distant. Distracted. The girl who can't keep it together. The one who needs help. The strong one. The fixer. The one who is always fine.

You did not pick most of those.

Someone called you that — once, twice, a hundred times — and the name stuck. And you started organizing your life around the name. Building strategies to manage the name. Apologizing for the name. Performing against the name. Performing into the name.

But none of that is the same as the name being true.

The world gave you a label. God gave you a name.

Here is the quiet exercise: write down five names you answer to. Then ask, of each one — who gave me this? When did I start answering to it? What part of my life have I organized around it?

Some of those names you will keep, because they are yours. Some of them you will set down, because they never were.

You do not have to make a public announcement about which is which. You just have to stop answering to the ones that were not given by anyone who actually knew you.
